Miami Dolphins kicker Cody Parkey was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week on Wednesday.

Parkey nailed the game-winning field goal in Sunday's victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. The game was Parkey's first as a Dolphin and it could not have gone much better. Parkey was perfect on his kicks and contributed 13 points to the win.

In addition to this award, Parkey set a franchise record with his four converted field goals. No Miami kicker had ever successfully made those many kicks in a debut before. With a final score of 19-17, every kick was important in the Miami victory.

After Miami moved on from Andrew Franks, it handed the kicking duties to Parkey. The change came right before the start of the season and Parkey is already paying dividends. Parkey had been under contract with the Cleveland Browns and the Dolphins claimed him off waivers.

Parkey's game-winning kick was from 54 yards out and it came with only 1:05 left in regulation. The distance is normal for Parkey and is likely a big reason that he is in Miami. While Franks did an admirable job, Parkey is now 7-7 on field goal tries from beyond 50 yards. Being able to convert a clutch kick like that, could be a deciding factor in the playoff chase.

The last time a Miami kicker took home this award, was way back in 2010. The honor went to Dan Carpenter at the time and he won it twice in that season. Parkey has a chance to match or even exceed that, with his hot start to the 2017 campaign.

The Dolphins will try to make it two wins in a row when they visit the New York Jets on Sunday.
