Dolphins Reinstate Derrick Shelby After Arrest

Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Derrick Shelby has been reinstated to the team a little more than a week after he was arrested in a Fort Lauderdale nightclub, the team said in a statement Tuesday.

"We have completed our process and have made the determination to reinstate Derrick. Derrick understood that he would be held accountable for his actions as they did not represent our organizational standards," head coach Joe Philbin said in the statement.

"I want to apologize to Stephen Ross, Coach Philbin, my teammates and our fans. I accept responsibility for the distraction I caused the team last week," Shelby said in the statement. "I have learned from my past actions and am fully committed to representing the Dolphins organization in a first-class manner on and off the field."

Shelby was suspended indefinitely last week by the Dolphins after his arrest earlier this month. The defensive end was arrested at Off the Hookah, which recently changed its name to CYN, after refusing to leave the establishment by security and police officers.

According to a Fort Lauderdale Police arrest report, Shelby had been removed from the club by security after a "disturbance," but was blocking the exit when an officer arrived. Shelby refused to leave and "took an aggressive fighting stance," the report said.

He was taken into custody after a struggle during which he was shot with a stun gun three times, the report said.

Shelby maintains that he didn’t do anything wrong to the police who were trying to throw him out of the club and that the cops were aggressive in throwing him out. Shelby told the Palm Beach Post that when he used a cell phone to film the incident, cops “became infuriated.”

In Shelby’s mugshot, his left eye is swollen, lip is bloodied and there appear to be abrasions on the left side of his face.

An undrafted pickup for the Dolphins in 2012, Shelby has appeared in all four of Miami's games this season, recording six tackles, two sacks and recovering a fumble.
