Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill will undergo season-ending knee surgery, according to a report from The Associated Press.
Tannehill will be placed on injured reserve by the team, which will officially put an end to his 2017 season. Assuming rehab and recovery goes well, Tannehill should be able to return in 2018.
During practice last week, Tannehill tore his ACL. The injury was similar to one that ended his 2016 season early, but the QB opted to not go under the knife that time around. With ir now being a recurring issue, Tannehill chose to get the knee fixed and try again in a year.
Miami went out and signed Jay Cutler to take over behind center, after Tannehill went down with the injury. The Cutler signing signaled that this move was likely coming. Cutler did not play in Miami's preseason opener, but he is expected to be on the field next Thursday.
Cutler's deal is for one season and it likely will remain that way. The veteran QB had retired from the NFL, prior to Miami's call. With Tannehill under contract for several more seasons, the job should be waiting for him next year. The Dolphins also have Matt Moore waiting to step in if necessary.
Injuries have been piling up for Miami in the preseason. After Jay Ajayi landed in the concussion protocol program, rookie Raekwon McMillan tore his ACL during the preseason opening game. McMillan will miss the entire season due to the injury and was in-line for a starting job.
Miami will take on the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday at Hard Rock Stadium.
