Miami Dolphins WR Mike Wallace has become a target of criticism after posting a series of tweets on Monday.
Responding to the story of NBA player Jason Collins coming out in a cover story in Sports Illustrated (the first active player in one of the big four sports leagues to come out), Wallace responded with a quizzical take on homosexuality.
"All these beautiful women in the world and guys wanna mess with other guys SMH..." read his first tweet (SMH stands for "shake my head" in internet parlance). He followed that up with, "I'm not bashing anybody don't have anything against anyone just don't understand it" (sic).
Wallace deleted the tweets very soon thereafter, but multiple media outlets (including the Miami Herald) preserved screenshots of the original tweets before Wallace deleted them.
He then issued a vague apology on Twitter: "Never said anything was right or wrong I just said I don't understand!! Deeply sorry for anyone that I offended."
Compare Wallace's reaction to that of the Miami Heat's Dwyane Wade. "Jason Collins showed a lot of courage today and I respect him for taking a stand and choosing to live in his truth," Wade tweeted Monday.
