The Miami Dolphins struggled to another 8-8 finish in the 2014 season, but that appears to be enough for head coach Joe Philbin to receive a contract extension.

According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said Wednesday evening that the team will offer Philbin a contract extension past the 2015 season. The Dolphins have not made the playoffs since 2008 and have finished 8-8 in the past two seasons.

Still, even with the Dolphins reportedly offering an extension to Philbin, it doesn’t guarantee that he will be the team’s head coach long term. Tony Sparano had been given a contract extension the year before he was fired by Ross in the 2011 season.

What many Dolphins fans will be watching this offseason is the type of changes made to the defense. The team’s collapse over the final weeks of the season helped seal another long offseason without a playoff berth.

The Dolphins gave up 28, 41, 35, and 37 points over the final four games of the season, losing three out of the four games. The Fins’ once vaunted defense ranked 24th in rushing yards allowed and 19th in rushing touchdowns allowed, according to profootballreference.com.

Overall, Miami’s defense ranked 20th in points allowed, 12th in yards allowed, and 21st in yards per rushing attempt, according to profootballreference.com.
