Former Marlins Continue World Series Tradition

A former Marlin has won a World Series ring in every season since 2003 and that will continue

The Miami Marlins have not seen the playoffs since 2003 but former players of the organization are making it an annual tradition.

Every season since the World Series run for the Marlins has featured at least one former Marlin picking up a championship ring. That trend is guaranteed to continue in 2014 as well with the three remaining teams.

The Kansas City Royals who won the American League pennant on Wednesday have three former Marlins on their active roster. Josh Willingham who played in Florida from 2004-2008 is a bench player with Kansas City. Omar Infante is the starting second baseman after playing with both the Florida and Miami Marlins from 2011-2012. Lastly, Jason Vargas who was the winning pitcher in the ALCS clincher was a Marlin from 2005-2006.

In St. Louis, left-handed reliever Randy Choate is on the roster for the Cardinals. Choate was a Marlin from 2011-2012 before a trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The San Francisco Giants have one-time Marlin Yusmeiro Petit on their roster. Petit who has become a pivotal arm for the Giants started his career back in 2006 with the Marlins.

Over the past 11 years, there have been many names that have come away with hardware after spending some of their career with the Marlins. The list begins back in 2004 when Kevin Millar won a ring with the Boston Red Sox. Millar who is now a television star began his career with the Marlins in 1998 following a purge of the World Champions from a year earlier.

In 2005 when the Chicago White Sox won the title, several former Marlins were involved. Pablo Ozuna and Carl Everett were both on the active roster. Ozuna played in Florida in 2000 and 2002 while Everett was a member of the 1993 roster. The White Sox had more connections that season as Ozzie Guillen managed the team with Tim Raines on the coaching staff. Guillen was a third base coach with the Marlins prior to becoming skipper in Chicago while Raines finished his playing career in 2002 as a Marlin.

2006 featured a championship from the Cardinals where Preston Wilson, Braden Looper and Juan Encarnacion all walked away with rings. Wilson was a Marlin from 1998-2002 and was a significant part of the daily lineup. Looper and Encarnacion were both members of the 2003 roster for Florida.

In 2007, Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell won the World Series for the second time. Both players were part of the 2003 run for Florida where they made tremendous contributions. They ended up in Boston as part of the same trade that brought Hanley Ramirez to the Marlins back in 2005.

The Philadelphia Phillies won the title in 2008 and there was one former Marlin on their roster. Rudy Seanez who briefly played in Florida during the 2004 season pitched in relief for the Phillies during their championship season.

2009 saw the New York Yankees walk away with the 27th championship in franchise history. On their roster were two names that had spent time in Florida. A.J. Burnett started his career with Florida and spent seven years in teal and black. Sergio Mitre was a Marlin from 2006-2007 before joining New York for their title run.

In 2010, one of the biggest names in Marlin history won another World Series ring. Edgar Renteria who had the game-winning hit in Florida's first ever championship was a member of the roster for the Giants. Also on that roster was Guillermo Mota who pitched for Florida from 2004-2005. In addition, Cody Ross who spent 2006-2010 as a Marlin was a part of the roster.

2011 featured a relatively obscure name but a Marlin nonetheless. Miguel Batista who pitched in nine games for Florida back in 1996 was a member of the Cardinals roster for their championship. Another pitcher on the St. Louis roster that season who spent a short time in Florida was Arthur Rhodes. The veteran lefty reliever was a part of 25 games for the Marlins in 2008.

The Giants would win another title in 2012 and there were four former Marlins present for that one. Mota, and Petit joined Clay Hensley and Brad Penny as the group of ex-Floridians. Hensley was a Marlin from 2010-2011 where he served as both a starter and a reliever. Penny was a member of the 2003 World Champs and would later return to Miami during the 2014 season as well.

Last season when the Red Sox won another title, Ryan Dempster and Andrew Miller were a part of the fun. Dempster was a Marlin from 1998-2002 and he started his career in Florida. Miller who came to Florida in the much maligned Miguel Cabrera trade has found success in his career since leaving the Marlins.

The Marlins remain hopeful that 2015 will feature a current roster member such as Giancarlo Stanton in the postseason rather than simply names from the past.
