Former NASCAR Driver Busted With Meth: Cops

Jermey Mayfield also had stolen property, according to N.C. police

Former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield was arrested in North Carolina with 1.5 grams of methamphetamine, police said.

Mayfield, who last raced in 2009, was arrested after police searched his home and found the drugs and $100,000 worth of stolen property, according to records from the Catawba County Sheriff's Office.

Mayfield, 42, was suspended indefinitely from NASCAR in 2009 for violating the organization’s substance abuse policy. Mayfield started 36 NASCAR Nationwide Series races in a 16-year career, winning the Pocono 500 in 1998 and finishing seventh in the 1998 Winston Cup.

Detectives told The Associated Press the alleged stolen merchandise – including welding equipment, truck parts and scrap metal – came from local businesses.

"Mr. Mayfield has no knowledge of either stolen property or methamphetamine being present on his property and denies the accusation that he was in possession of methamphetamine or any other illegal drug and he denies any suggestion that he knowingly received or possessed stolen property," his attorney, Daniel Marin, told the AP.

Mayfield's 2009 suspension came when he tested positive twice for methamphetamine. Mayfield ran into trouble in April when a pack of dogs he owned attacked a mail carrier.
