Giancarlo Stanton Nominated for Hank Aaron Award

Giancarlo Stanton is the Marlins nominee for the 2014 Hank Aaron Award in the National League

Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton was named as a nominee for the Hank Aaron Award on Monday.

The award recognizes the best offensive player in the National League which Stanton has a great chance of winning. Voting for the award is a combination from fans as well as a panel of Hall of Famers.

Stanton still has hopes of capturing the NL Most Valuable Award as well but that one was voted on by writers around the country. MVP voting took place at the conclusion of the season and will be announced in November. While Stanton paced all NL hitters i many categories, he faces stiff competition from a few players especially Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Missing the last 17 games of the season due to injury could end up costing Stanton the MVP Award but he still led those aforementioned categories despite the layoff. That sill could be enough to land him the coveted Aaron honor.

His 37 home runs led all of the NL, the first time in franchise history a player has accomplished that feat. Stanton also had 105 runs batted in which was second best and he potentially would've had the most without his injury factored in. Stanton led the NL in slugging percentage, and total bases. The right-fielder was second in on-base plus slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and walks.

The award which is named in honor of the Hall of Famer is handed out annually to one player in each league. Andrew McCutchen could provide the biggest challenge to Stanton as he is also considered an MVP candidate.

Fans can vote at MLB.com until October 5th with the presentation of the award coming during the 2014 World Series.
