Golden Revives Canes QB Derby

Jacory Harris and Stephen Morris have 3 days to win the starting QB job

As promised, Jacory Harris will have a chance to take the first-team quarterback duties back from Stephen Morris in practice.

UM coach Al Golden said Tuesday Morris and Harris will get three days to win the starting job. The renewed competition follows a one-week reprieve from competition as Harris served a one-game suspension for accepting gifts from booster Nevin Shapiro.

Morris started in Harris' place against Maryland on Monday night. He performed well for much of the game, but his interception in the final minute sealed the game for the Terps.

Golden told the Miami Herald Morris "made a lot of good throws." He was 19-of-28 for 195 yards on the night.

But Golden tempered his praise by noting that in addition to his two interceptions and fumble, Morris was responsible for some "operational things" that led to offensive miscues.

Chief among them were the Hurricanes' numerous penalties on offense, including a key illegal procedure call at one point in the fourth quarter and two delay of game penalties before one play at another.

Morris may well have the upper hand over Harris, but he would have been in a stronger position to keep his job had that drive after Maryland took a one-point lead ended up in points for Miami instead of Maryland.

Instead, he has to fend of Harris, who will be making one last shot to salvage what has been a college career of unmet potential.

The whole situation figures to remain dramatic for at least a little while longer.
