Heat Add Larry Drew II to Roster

The Heat signed Larry Drew II to their roster on Monday bringing their total to 19 players

The Miami Heat signed Larry Drew II on Monday and now have 19 players on their roster with two preseason games to go.

Drew played at the University of North Carolina from 2008-2011 and UCLA from 2012-2013 before going undrafted in the 2013 NBA Draft. While a reason wasn't stated for his transfer, a decline in playing time at UNC may have contributed to the decision.

While in school, Drew was a part of the 2009 NCAA Champion Tar Heels and was also on the All-Pac-12 first team in 2013. Drew was also a McDonald's All-American in 2008 where he was the winner of the annual three-point contest.

Drew was in the Summer League as part of Miami's team in July. The 24-year-old also played in a preseason game for the Heat in 2013. After being waived by the Heat in October of 2013, Drew would go on to play for the Sioux Falls Skyforce which is Miami's affiliate in the NBA's Development League.

Drew performed well with Sioux Falls as he averaged 11 points to go along with seven assists and eight rebounds. He also showed skills from the three-point line with a 41 percent shooting percentage. The Heat have had their share of struggles on threes in the preseason which adds some intrigue to this signing.

The odds of Drew making the team for the regular season would seem slim but it is possible he could head back to Sioux Falls if he fails to make the cut. Miami will need to reduce its roster to 15 players before the opener on Oct. 29.

The Heat will continue the preseason on Tuesday with a game against the Houston Rockets in Miami.
