Hechavarria Blasts Game Winner for Marlins

Adeiny Hechavarria hit a game-winning three-run home run in the bottom of the 9th

Adeiny Hechavarria hit a three-run home run in the ninth as his Miami Marlins walked off with a 5-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Sunday.

The ninth inning started badly for Miami when A.J. Ramos blew a save despite entering with a two-run lead. The blown save cost Jose Fernandez a win and marked the fifth time this year that Ramos failed to slam the door. Due to the home run, Ramos ended up getting the win which was his first of the season.

The home run was Hechavarria's fifth of the year and the shortstop now has 42 runs batted in as well. Hechavarria is known for his flashy defense, but has also stepped up at the plate this year.

Fernandez did not have his best stuff, but the box score tells a different story. The ace struck out ten across six scoreless innings. It took 112 pitches for Fernandez to get through those six frames, and he was sweating profusely for most of the game. The 112 pitches is a season-high for Fernandez.

Carter Capps entered in the eighth looking to keep the lead where it was, but left after only one out do to an injury. The Marlins are calling it right elbow stiffness and have stated that Capps is day-to-day.

Miami's other two runs in the game came way back in the first inning. That 2-0 score would last until the ninth when both teams scored several runs. Miguel Rojas and Derek Dietrich contributed the early runs for the Marlins.

The Marlins get to try and play the role of spoilers when the New York Mets visit for a series that starts on Monday.  Tom Koehler will get the ball in the series opener for Miami.
