University of Miami basketball's knight in hometown armor won't be coming to Coral gables after all.
Pine Crest High phenom Brandon Knight has scratched the Hurricanes off his one-year college trip tour, according to a report in the Sun-Sentinel.
Miami was among a group of 10 colleges that appeared to be in the running to display Knight's amazing skills for a limited time only, but the senior point guard said he doesn't plan on giving out a hometown discount.
"They're not in my top five," Knight told the Sentinel. "I like coach [Frank] Haith, but my family and I felt it probably wasn't the best place for me."
It was a soft let down for the Canes, kind of like someone breaking up with you in a text messages.
Knight could have said UM's basketball program is a joke and couldn't hold a candle to the likes of Kentucky, Kansas or UConn, three of the other colleges pursuing the top-rated high school basketball player in the country.
We couldn't blame him, despite our fantasies of seeing Knight bring down the house against ACC foes. But seriously, Um probably never had a shot to begin with, but Knight kept them in the running out of a since of local loyalty.
Knight was the 2009 Gatorade Player of the Year and averaged 33 points per game while leading Pine Crest to the state final four.
