Marlins' Dietrich Hit in the Head by Foul Ball

Derek Dietrich could miss some time after being hit in the head with a foul ball on Sunday

The Miami Marlins had a scary moment during Sunday's win when Derek Dietrich was hit in the head with a foul ball.

Dietrich was seated on the left-hand side of the dugout when a ball hit the wall behind him and ricocheted into his head. Manager Don Mattingly stated that the ball made contact with the back of Dietrich's head. According to Mattingly, Dietrich never lost consciousness.

Television cameras missed the moment of impact, but caught the aftermath which showed Dietrich down on the ground. The second baseman remained down for several minutes while his teammates looked on. Dietrich would eventually walk off on his own into the locker room.

After the game, the Marlins provided an update which stated that the X-rays taken were negative. In addition, the team said Dietrich would remain in Atlanta overnight for further evaluation. The Marlins are sure to be cautious with Dietrich who was not wearing a helmet when the ball struck him.

Dietrich has been one of Miami's hottest hitters as of late, and has been a big reason for the team's success this season. After taking over the everyday job at 2B, Dietrich has provided Miami with consistent offense and defense. The 26-year old is currently on a six-game hitting streak and is hitting .521 during the stretch.

Before the injury occurred in the eighth inning, Dietrich had powered Miami to the lead. The second baseman hit a home run and also doubled while knocking in four of Miami's seven runs.

Should Dietrich miss extended time, the Marlins would likely turn to Miguel Rojas. The team would also need to dip into the minor leagues for some bench help at that point.
