The Miami Marlins saw their comeback attempt fall short in a 5-4 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday.

Miami was trailing 5-0 when the sixth inning started and scored four runs over the next two frames. Miami would have more chances to tie the game afterwards, but was unable to find a timely hit.

Jose Fernandez had a rare poor effort in this one. The ace allowed five runs in five innings while allowing five hits and a pair of walks. Fernandez did strike out nine, but that helped end his day early. Despite only lasting five innings, Fernandez threw 94 pitches.

Martin Prado's two-run home run in the sixth inning made the game a lot closer. The Marlins had been trailing by four runs prior to Prado's fourth home run of the season.

Dee Gordon returned from his 80-game suspension and went 0-4. The second baseman had been hitting well in AAA as of late, and should provide Miami with excellent production at the top of its lineup.

Ichiro Suzuki appeared as a pinch-hitter in the game and doubled. The hit was the 2,998th of Suzuki's career and he is now just two shy of the 3,000 mark. When Suzuki notches the monumental hit, he will become just the 30th player in Major League Baseball history to do so.

The series will continue on Friday when Jose Urena gets the ball for the start against St. Louis.
