Marlins Given Permission to Move Home Run Sculpture

The Marlins will be moving their home run sculpture to the plaza outside of Marlins Park

The Miami Marlins were given permission to move their home run sculpture out of Marlins Park on Tuesday.

Miami-Dade County needed to approve the request from the Marlins, as the sculpture was part of the original ballpark agreement. The team plans to move the sculpture to the plaza outside of the park. The Marlins are making a number of changes to the ballpark this off-season and this could be the biggest of all.

The sculpture would go into motion following a home run by the Marlins and it also activated after victories. These actions will still occur, but only those outside of the park will be able to view it. The team will also turn the sculpture on at 3:05 p.m. each day.

New York artist Red Grooms designed the sculpture known as "Homer" and he was not looking forward to this decision. Grooms opposed the move, as the sculpture was originally designed for use inside the park. Ultimately, the decision was up to the county and not Grooms however.

The Marlins will use the space previously occupied by the sculpture as a standing-room only section. Ticket prices in this section have not been confirmed, but they could be as low as $10 per person. This affordable pricing and great view, could result in an up-tick in attendance in 2019. The Marlins could use that increase, as they had abysmal attendance this past season.

The Marlins may make changes to their roster in addition to the ballpark enhancements. Miami is currently one of the teams interested in a trio of international free agents. The Marlins could also target some big-league free agents this off-season.
