Marlins Held Scoreless for Second Straight Game

The Marlins were shutout for the second game in a row in their 4-0 loss on Monday

The Miami Marlins were unable to score for a second straight game and fell 4-0 to the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday.

A day after losing a 3-0 game to the New York Mets, Miami was held to no runs by one of the worst teams in baseball. The Marlins have struggled to compete with losing teams all season long, and that could end up having playoff implications. For now, the Marlins find themselves in a tie for the second Wild-Card spot.

Jarred Cosart pitched decently, but wasn't efficient in his five innings. Cosart allowed no runs on three hits and a walk. It took the right-hander 92 pitches to complete the effort however and led to a long day for the bullpen.

Cosart was making his first start since being recalled from AAA. One of Cosart's main issues has been a lack of control and that didn't help his efficiency in this one. Despite only issuing one walk, Cosart found himself in long counts often and had to work extended innings to find outs.

A.J. Ramos entered in the ninth inning with a two-run deficit and the Phillies managed to quickly double that. By the time Miami's closer left the game, Philadelphia held a 4-0 lead.

Miami was held to only two hits and both were singles. Phillies starter Jeremy Hellickson was brilliant in his six innings of work. Hellickson allowed only one hit and had thrown only 70 pitches when he was lifted for a pinch-hitter.

The series will continue on Tuesday when Tom Koehler makes the start for Miami.
