Marlins Hire Mike Redmond as Manager

Former Marlins catcher tabbed to replace Ozzie Guillen

The Miami Marlins have made their choice to replace former manager Ozzie Guillen, and that person is former Marlins catcher Mike Redmond.

Redmond, 41, was signed to a 3-year contract that runs through the 2015 season, the team announced in a statement. The details of his salary were unknown.

Because he has so little experience, he will likely come cheap, giving the Marlins more flexibility while they are on the hook for the last three years of Guillen's contract (with $7.5 million in salary remaining).

Redmond interviewed for the Marlins' job in late October. He was the manager of Toronto's Class-A club in Dunedin last season, and led its affiliate in Lansing in 2011. He came up as a player through the Marlins organization, spending seven seasons with the club and winning a World Series ring as Ivan Rodriguez' backup in 2003.

Redmond also played five seasons with Minnesota and one season with Cleveland before retiring in 2010.

Former major league manager Larry Bowa, former Pittsburgh Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon, and Cincinnati Reds pitching coach Bryan Price also interviewed to replace Guillen, who was fired after one season. Price later withdrew from consideration.

Redmond and his wife, Michele, reside in Spokane, WA with their sons, Michael and Ryan.

Shortly after the announcement Thursday, Guillen posted congratulations to Redmond on Twitter.

"congrats mike redmond for u new job good luck buddy u have great guys going to play for you," he wrote in one tweet, before following it up with "hope the best for you u rae a good baseball man and you will have fun whit the players."
