Marlins Making Final Roster Decisions

The Marlins nearly completed their roster plans on Tuesday with a series of decisions

The Miami Marlins entered spring training with roster spots up for grabs and Tuesday brought decisions on most of those jobs.

While Miami did not officially make some of the transactions, the players involved were informed of the moves. With less than a week until Opening Day, the Marlins will now give the majority of remaining playing time to those expected to be on the roster.

Nick Masset, who was in camp as a non-roster invitee, was released. The veteran reliever allowed nine runs in 11 innings. Masset was considered a possible option for the bullpen before his rough spring.

Tyler Colvin, Cole Gillespie and Reid Brignac were all reassigned to Minor League camp. Brignac quickly opted to become a free agent which is something the other two players may do as well. If they do not opt out, Colvin and Gillespie could serve as AAA depth.

Brignac started the spring off as one of Miami's best hitters but that production tailed off as of late. With Donovan Solano doing a solid job, the Marlins decided to go in another direction. Brignac, who spent most of his career with Tampa Bay, may find a job elsewhere in the big leagues.

In addition to the official transactions, Miami let Jhonatan Solano and Jordany Valdespin know that they missed the cut. Solano's brother Donovan will be on the roster as will Don Kelly who is in camp as a non-roster invitee. Valdespin had one of the best springs in all of baseball but will now open the year in New Orleans.

The Marlins rotation, lineup, and bench is now set. All that remains in question is the bullpen, though that too may be easy to predict at this stage. Sam Dyson is expected to take the last remaining slot with Aaron Crow destined for a disabled list stint.

Miami will open the 2015 season on April 6th at Marlins Park.
