Marlins Manage Only 1 Run On 13 Hits in Loss

The Marlins collected 13 hits but could only plate a lone run in a 9-1 loss to the Mets

The Miami Marlins didn't have trouble getting on base but brought only one run in during Tuesday's 9-1 loss to the New York Mets.

Miami had 13 hits in the loss but only two went for extra bases when Reed Johnson doubled for the 11th time this season and Ed Lucas collected his fifth two-base hit. This has been a trend for the Marlins ever since Giancarlo Stanton was injured last week. The Marlins have struggled to get a big hit and collect extra base hits overall.

As a team, Miami was 2-9 with runners in scoring position and left ten men on base. Johnson who was serving as the right-fielder in this one had a three-hit game. The Marlins have gone with several names in the corner outfield spot without Stanton available.

Donovan Solano also had three hits in a start at second base. It's been a decent season for Solano but of his 67 hits, only 13 have gone for extra-bases. Miami needs more offensive production from second base and will likely look to upgrade going into 2015.

Nathan Eovaldi has had a tough go at it as of late and that only continued on Tuesday. Eovaldi allowed six runs in 4.1 innings. With a career high 186.2 innings thrown this season, it is possible that the right-hander has simply run out of gas. The Marlins could elect to shut Eovaldi down and get him ready for 2015.

A man who will almost certainly not be a part of the team's plans in 2015 entered next. Brad Penny in his second stint as a Marlin has not been productive and he allowed this game to get out of hand. Penny allowed three runs on five hits in only two innings and now has a 6.29 E.R.A this season.

The Marlins will go for the series win on Wednesday when Henderson Alvarez takes the mound.
