Marlins Overcome 16 Strikeouts in Win

The Marlins struck out 16 times on Monday but still came away with a comeback win in New York

The Miami Marlins were overmatched for most of the game but stormed back for a 6-5 win over the New York Mets on Monday.

Jacob deGrom of the Mets struck out the first eight batters of the game which set a franchise record. That mark also tied for Major League record for consecutive strikeouts to begin a game. In addition, it doubled the previous record in Miami history in terms of strikeouts by the opposition to start a game.

The Marlins got to deGrom in the seventh inning for three runs after he had struck out a career high 13 batters. Those three runs gave Miami a lead after it trailed 2-0 for most of the evening. After the Mets regained the advantage in the bottom of the seventh, the Marlins put another three on the board in the eighth frame.

The six runs were scored without the benefit of a single home run. Justin Bour had one of his finer days in the big leagues as he went 2-3 with a run scored and a walk. Adeiny Hechavarria and Jeff Mathis also had two-hit days. The shortshop doubled for one of his hits and had a pair of runs batted in as well.

The Marlins lineup tallied plenty of strikeouts all game long even after deGrom exited. In all, the Marlins struck out 16 times with five players striking out multiple times. Marcell Ozuna had the toughest time with his three strikeouts on the day.

Jarred Cosart pitched well but was out-dueled by deGrom and came away with a no-decision. Cosart allowed two runs in his six innings of work. The Mets managed five hits and walked twice against Cosart.

In the ninth, Steve Cishek sealed the victory for his 36th save of the season.

The series in New York will continue on Tuesday when Nathan Eovaldi makes the start for the Marlins.
