The Miami Marlins placed starting pitcher Jacob Turner on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain according to MLB.com.
The move is retroactive to April 4th and reliever Arquimedes Caminero was recalled from AAA New Orleans to take the roster spot. Following Tuesday's game, the Marlins scratched Turner from his scheduled start on Wednesday but waited a day to make the disabled list transaction. Brad Hand is set to take the ball in Washington D.C. and will in all likelihood keep the rotation spot until Turner's return. In Turner's one start this year he struggled, but the team eventually picked up a comeback win.
The injury occurred during batting practice prior to Tuesday's tilt against the Nationals per a report by the Sun-Sentinel. It is commonplace for the next day's starter to take part in batting practice as to not overwork himself on the actual day of his start. With a young pitcher such as Turner, Miami is always going to lean on the side of caution. A shoulder strain far too often becomes a much bigger injury if not rested properly.
As for Caminero, he had an excellent spring but lost out on making the team due to roster rules. The team can only carry 25 players with 12-13 being pitchers normally. Caminero also had a minor league option remaining which allowed him to be demoted without being exposed to other teams. Even at the time of the demotion, it was apparent that his time in the minors could be short and that he would likely be given the first big league chance amongst the minor league options. That day has now arrived and it's plausible that Caminero remains on the roster the rest of the way if he is successful. In AAA this year, the 26-year old has had success in limited action.
Hand and the Marlins will take on the Nationals at 7:05 p.m on Wednesday night looking to end a two-game skid.
