Marlins' Prado Exits WBC Game Early With Leg Injury

Marlins third baseman Martin Prado left Wednesday's WBC game in the sixth inning with a leg injury

Miami Marlins third baseman Martin Prado left Wednesday's World Baseball Classic game early with a leg injury.

It appeared as if Prado injured his hamstring while trying to run to first. Prado was lifted from the game after limping back into the dugout. The veteran is currently on the roster for the Venezuela team, and his status for the remainder of the WBC is unknown at this time.

For Miami, this could be a big loss potentially. Hamstring injuries for baseball players are notoriously slow-healing and can regress if not given ample time to heal. While Prado may still be ready for Opening Day, any time off could hinder his ability to be game-ready. With just a little more than two weeks until Opening Day, the Marlins have to be concerned about their starting 3B.

If Prado misses time, the Marlins could use Miguel Rojas at third base. The utility-man is expected to be on Miami's bench, but has shown his ability to play above-average defense. While Rojas could provide the glove work, Miami would still miss Prado's bat and leadership.

As Miami's unofficial team captain, Prado has become a mentor for the young roster. The players on the field toss the ball to Prado at the end of every defensive half-inning, as a sign of his leadership. Prado also spoke at Jose Fernandez's funeral in September.

This off-season, the Marlins showed their commitment to Prado with a long-term deal. That new deal kicks in this season, and it now remains to be seen when the games will begin for Prado.
