Marlins Sign Mike Redmond to Contract Extension

The Marlins have extended manager Mike Redmond's contract through the 2017 season

The Miami Marlins extended manager Mike Redmond's contract through the 2017 season on Sunday.

Redmond was about to enter the third year of his original contract. As part of the announcement, the Marlins also stated that the entire coaching staff will return in 2015.

In Redmond's two years as skipper, the Marlins have had losing records but showed tremendous growth in 2014. Following a 100-loss season in his initial year at the helm, the Marlins stayed in the playoff hunt going into September this year.

Despite adversity, injuries and a modest payroll, Redmond kept his team motivated and fighting until the end. The chemistry in the locker room has been apparent and the Marlins have shown growth both on and off the field under Redmond.

Before taking over as manager in Miami, Redmond had managed in the minor league ranks of Toronto's organization. The former Florida Marlin catcher made a quick transition from the diamond to the dugout when his playing career came to an end.

It is possible that Redmond will take home National League Manager of the Year honors this season. Without ace Jose Fernandez for the majority of the season, the Marlins still stayed in the hunt. Their 77 wins going into Sunday's finale were good for the most since 2010 for the franchise. The Marlins also found themselves in a position to finish in second place in the division on the final day of the season.

With the coaching staff situation settled, the Marlins will soon turn their attention tot he 2015 roster. Signing Giancarlo Stanton to a long term deal remains a big goal for Miami and it is likely that the team will make other moves as well.
