Marlins Trade Stanton to Yankees: Report

The Miami Marlins have traded MVP Giancarlo Stanton to the New York Yankees, according to a report by FanRag Sports.

The deal will still require Stanton to waive his no-trade clause, but reports have said this will not be an issue. The return going back to Miami is not known at this time, but it could be a mix of veterans and minor leaguers. It appears likely that the Marlins will inherit one or two of New York's contracts to partially off-set the cost of Stanton. The prospects may not be the Yankees' top talent, but could still represent a better haul than expected previously.

New York has one of the better minor league systems in all of baseball, but is very protective of top prospects. A name such as Gleyber Torres is unlikely to be involved in this trade and is ticketed for a future role in the Bronx. Miami could still pick up a couple of names for the future. Working in the Marlins' favor is a familiarity with the system. Front office executive Gary Denbo previously worked in New York and is one of Miami's main decision makers now.

The Yankees will now be able to pair Stanton with Rookie of the Year Aaron Judge. The outfielder who almost won the MVP himself, has been likened to Stanton in the past. This combination could give the Yankees a powerful offense on a daily basis.

For the Marlins, this will close the book on a storied career. Stanton finished off his time in Miami with 59 home runs. The slugger set franchise records and Major League records in 2017. Ultimately though, the $295 million owed to Stanton became too much for the Marlins to handle. CEO Derek Jeter worked tirelessly to move the contract since taking over.

After agreeing to trades with both the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals, Jeter saw Stanton veto those deals. The CEO moved quickly however to engage his former club and come to a deal less than 24 hours later. Jeter who served as New York's last captain is ticketed for the Hall of Fame, but is a rookie as a front office executive. This is Jeter's first big move and could be examined for years to come.

Miami is not done yet, it will still try to make more trades in the coming days and weeks. Marcell Ozuna is expected to stay, but an appealing offer could change things. Christian Yelich likewise figures to be in Miami in 2018, but is far from untouchable. With an eye towards the future and a poor minor league system, the Marlins will be receptive on all talks.
