Steve McNair recorded a suicide prevention public service announcement just months before the former NFL star was killed by a girlfriend in a murder-suicide.

The ad was in post-production and had yet to air, according to The Associated Press. Now officials say they will shelve the 60-second spot.

"It now is not only inappropriate, but doesn't serve the community, his family or memory -- or the issue we hoped the PSA would help address," said Jill Hudson, a spokeswoman for Tennessee's Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities.

Hudson said the former Tennessee Titan taped the spot in April, and producers had been putting the final touches on it in hopes of using the announcement sometime this year.

Authorities have confimed that McNair, 36, was murdered by his 20-year-old girlfriend, Sashel Kazemi, who then turned the gun on herself. McNair was married and had four children.

Their bodies were found on Saturday afternoon in McNair's condominium in downtown Nashville. McNair was reportedly shot four times, including twice in the head.

Fans turned out by the thousands on Thursday at several public memorials for McNair throughout Tennessee.
