McRoberts Could Miss Start of Season For Heat

Free-agent addition Josh McRoberts may not make his debut for the Heat on opening night

Josh McRoberts is recovering from toe surgery and his status for the Miami Heat remains uncertain per the Miami Herald.

While the regular season remains several weeks away, McRoberts could potentially miss the start of the year. This comes after recent news that he will miss most, if not all of the preseason schedule for Miami.

McRoberts came over to the Heat via free agency this past off-season and signed a four-year contract worth a reported $23 million. The 27-year old is expected to start and play a key role for the Heat as they begin a new era. McRoberts when healthy will play alongside a regular starting group of Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade, Mario Chalmers and Luol Deng.

If McRoberts is unable to play when the season tips off, Udonis Haslem will likely see the bulk of minutes. It's not a situation that is expected to drag on but the Heat are sure to be cautious in the early going. With a long season and every expectation of the playoffs, the Heat will need McRoberts to only take the court when he's 100% ready.

Part of what McRoberts brings to the Heat is another option beyond the three-point line. With Bosh expected to play more of an inside-game this season, the Heat will need somebody to stand behind the perimeter. McRoberts is likely going to be that guy on many days and his success will ultimately be a big factor for the Heat.

While in Charlotte with the Bobcats, McRoberts sank 36% of his three-point attempts in 2013-14. He was even better during the playoffs at a 47% clip on his trey attempts. McRoberts also averaged more than four rebounds and four assists per game last season.

The Heat will play their second preseason game on Tuesday against the Orlando Magic.
