Miami Commissioners Agree to Stadium Talks With David Beckham Group

The City of Miami is moving forward with a proposal to build a stadium for David Beckham's Major League Soccer team, but not everyone is happy about the way the process has been handled.

On Thursday, commissioners signed off on holding discussions to build a stadium on land just west of Marlins Park. Earlier this week, NBC 6 spoke to neighbors who are concerned the proposal by Beckham's group may force them out of their homes.

Before Thursday's vote, Commissioner Frank Carollo told Mayor Tomas Regalado that he's upset those neighbors are hearing about all of this through the media and not from the city or the Beckham group.

"I don't think that's correct so that's why I call it irresponsible and disrespectful to those residents," Carollo said. "I represent those residents, we all represent those residents and we cannot forget them."

"I was elected by them," Regalado replied.

"Exactly, so you cannot forget about them," Carollo said.

The commission agreed to keep neighbors informed about the negotiations.

The University of Miami has expressed an interest in partnering with Beckham on the stadium, but it's not clear if the university will be involved moving forward.
