Morse Homers Twice in Loss

Michael Morse hit two home runs on a day that Miami fell to the New York Mets 12-3

The Miami Marlins were easily beaten 12-3 by the New York Mets on Monday, but not before Michael Morse hit two home runs.

The first baseman has enjoyed a fine spring with four home runs and a .379 average. The two-blast day was part of a three-hit day overall for Morse who also had three runs batted in. Morse's production will be key to Miami's success as he is set to hit behind Giancarlo Stanton daily.

The news was the opposite for Miami's starter in this one, Mat Latos. In a horrific outing, the veteran allowed nine runs on eight hits in his three innings. Latos now has a 9.90 E.R.A this spring as the regular season nears.

Most of the damage came in the second inning when New York scored eight of its runs, all of which came against Latos. The Mets would also add a pair of runs off of Vin Mazzaro later in the game. The non-roster invitee could find himself as a member of the next wave of cuts.

Rule five pick Andrew McKirahan made another statement with two shutout innings. The left-hander has a 2.57 E.R.A this spring and should find himself on the Opening Day roster. If Miami does not add McKirahan to the active roster, he would have to be offered back to the Chicago Cubs.

The Marlins were relatively quiet offensively outside of the aforementioned production from Morse. Stanton was 0-3 with two strikeouts as his spring average dipped to .276.

Tom Koehler will take the mound for Miami on Tuesday as it takes on the Boston Red Sox at 1:05 p.m.
