They U, They Score! NFL ‘Canes on Record Streak

We assume they also lead the league in late hits. Swagger!

Their first round draft streak might have ended, but Miami Hurricanes in the NFL are finding a way to keep streaking: at least one former 'Cane has scored a touchdown on a Sunday for a record 113 weeks.

Just how crazy is such an accomplishment? It's been six and a half years since the last weekend went by without a score from a former Miami player -- 31 weeks longer than the previous record holder, Ohio State. (No, Ted Ginn, Jr. didn't ruin that, too -- the Buckeyes' streak was on from 1996-2001).

In other words, were you to find that little football prodigies sprouting like kudzu from sugar cane fields and out from under inner city overpasses south of Lake Okeechobee were an unfair advantage, you'd still have to hand it to the U. It's just been that long.

Miami's record goes all the way back to Week 15 of 2002, when then-Bronco Clinton Portis ran for four touchdowns against the Chiefs. Even more ridiculous, over 500 touchdowns later, is that the pro Canes have combined for an average of over four scores per Sunday and compiled about 30 interception or fumble returns over the period.

Too bad there wasn't an early-decade Hurricanes-Dolphins pipeline established: AFC rivals were the beneficiaries of 56 of those 516 TDs, and old nemesis Indianapolis a whopping 93.

Records also held by Miami alum in the NFL: white bread-iest, flyest, and prettiest. Not a bad showing, really.
