Panthers Waste Power Play Opportunities in Loss to Capitals

The Panthers had their chances and numerous power plays before falling to the Capitals

The Florida Panthers let three power plays go to waste in a 4-2 loss to the Washington Capitals on Thursday.

The Panthers had four power plays during the game and were only able to convert on one of those opportunities. That proved costly for Florida against a team it should battle all season long in the standings. By not taking advantage of the chances, the Panthers suffered their first regulation loss of the season.

Florida is now 2-1-1 this season after falling in a shootout in its last game. The five points for the Panthers has them two back of the Capitals following this loss.

Michael Matheson scored his second goal in as many games. After notching his first career goal last time out, Matheson put home his second of the season in the first period. Assisting on the score were Keith Yandle and Aleksander Barkov.

In the second period with his team down by one, Jaromir Jagr's first goal of the season tied the game up. Jagr's goal came during a power play and was the only such score during an advantage for Florida. Barkov and Jonathan Marchessault assisted Jagr on the goal.

Roberto Luongo lost for the first time this season after sitting out Florida's last game. Luongo saved 25 of the 29 attempts sent his way.

Florida will stay home and host the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
