Panthers Win Season Finale

The Panthers finished the 2016-17 season with a win over the Capitals on Sunday

The Florida Panthers finished the 2016-17 season with a 2-0 win over the Washington Capitals on Sunday.

The shutout was the second straight for Florida and goalie James Reimer. It was a great ending to a disappointing season for the Panthers. With this win, Florida ended up with a 35-36-11 record on the season.

Derek MacKenzie's shorthanded goal put Florida on the board late in the second period. Until the score at the 15:47 mark, both teams had went scoreless in the contest. The goal for MacKenzie was his sixth of the season and it with an assist from Colton Sceviour.

At the 9:47 mark of the third period, Denis Malgin gave Florida a two-goal lead. The goal which was the last of the season for the Panthers, was Malgin's sixth of the season. Reilly Smith and Nick Bjugstad both assisted on the power play goal.

Reimer had 33 saves and stopped every attempt sent his way. The 29-year old finished the year with a 17-16-5 record and had a .917 save percentage. Reimer was asked to step in on an everyday basis for much of the second half, due to injury problems for Roberto Luongo.

After making the playoffs last year, Florida's result this season could lead to several changes. Interim head coach Tom Rowe will be replaced on the bench and Florida could also look to make some changes on the ice.
