Pop Warner Settles Youth Football Concussions Lawsuit

Terms of the settlement were not disclosed

Pop Warner, the youth football organization, said Wednesday it had settled a lawsuit with a Wisconsin woman who alleged her son committed suicide due to brain injuries he incurred playing tackle football beginning at age 11, NBC News reported.

Terms of the settlement weren't disclosed. The woman, Debra Pyka of Hixton, had sought $5 million and punitive damages in the suit, filed last year in U.S. District Court in Madison.

Brian Heffron, a spokesman for Pop Warner, confirmed to NBC News that the case had been settled but said he couldn't comment further. In a statement, the organization said it "has been a leader in addressing player safety, including around the concussion issues."

Attorneys for Pyka couldn't immediately be reached for comment. She had claimed her son, who hanged himself in 2012 at age 25, had chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
