Stanton, McGehee and Dunn Capture Local Awards

Giancarlo Stanton, Casey McGehee and Mike Dunn all picked up awards from the BBWAA on Tuesday

The Miami Marlins had three players recognized on Tuesday by the local chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Giancarlo Stanton, Casey McGehee and Mike Dunn all were named award winners per a report from the radio voice of the Marlins, Glenn Geffner. The awards come from the South Florida chapter of the BBWAA which hands out annual awards in various categories.

Stanton who could win the National League Most Valuable Player Award from the BBWAA, was named as the MVP in the local chapter. The chapter only considers players on the Marlins so this was likely a clear and easy decision by the local writers. The slugger who had his season cut short on September 11th with an injury amassed big numbers all season long.

Stanton finished his exceptional year with a slashline of .288/.395/.555 with 37 home runs and 105 runs batted in. Stanton also supplied ample defense and even 13 stolen bases to help keep Miami in the playoff race in mid-September.

McGehee has had a more mixed season for the Marlins. The first half of the year made McGehee an All-Star Game contender and had him near the top of numerous hitting categories. The second half hasn't been quite as kind and has seen McGehee ground into a large amount of double-plays as well. All told though, McGehee was a vast improvement at third base for Miami and will likely be back there in 2015.

The award that McGehee was honored with is entitled the Jeff Conine Mr. Marlin Award. The award which is named in honor of the original Marlin is distributed to the player with the most integrity and unselfish play. Those are characteristics that Conine was known for during this playing days.

The third and final award taken home by Dunn is the Good Guy Award. This is given to the player who works best with the media. Dunn has enjoyed a fine season and is also active in the local community.

The Marlins are winding down their 2014 season with a final week of games. The season will end on Sunday in Washington, D.C.
