Stanton Picks Up RBI Double in Marlins Win

Giancarlo Stanton helped the Marlins beat the Mets on Wednesday with an RBI double

Giancarlo Stanton doubled home a run to help the Miami Marlins come away with a 7-4 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday.

At the time, the double tied the game at two and the run would be the last scored by Miami until the seventh inning. In that seventh frame, the Marlins scored five times after entering the inning down a pair of runs.

The double for Stanton was his first of the spring and the slugger now has two runs batted in as well. Stanton has gotten off to a sluggish start with the bat but his timing is beginning to improve. Thus far in the Grapefruit League, Stanton is hitting only .167 but that number should begin to rise going forward.

Stanton wasn't the only Marlin to double in this game as Jarrod Saltalamacchia also doubled for the first time in March. Like his teammate, Saltalamacchia has struggled to get his bat going. Miami is hoping for a resurgent year from the veteran catcher after a disappointing 2014 season.

Ichiro Suzuki brought home his second run of the spring as he continues to see regular at-bats. Suzuki will be a reserve for the Marlins but has been playing as often as the regulars thus far. The veteran will likely see duty on most days in the regular season either as a pinch-runner or pinch-hitter.

On the mound to start things for Miami was Henderson Alvarez. In his three innings, the likely Opening Day starter gave up a pair of runs on four hits. Brad Hand who is out of minor-league options gave up a run in two innings. Hand will need to make the team or will be exposed to waivers.

The Marlins will send Jarred Cosart to the mound on Thursday as they take on the Minnesota Twins in Fort Myers.
