Stuart Police Trainee Signs Free Agent Deal With Detroit Lions

A former Florida State football player who was training to become a police officer is heading back to the NFL, according to NBC affiliate WPTV.

Gio Newberry, who played at FSU from 2012 to 2015 and joined the Steelers as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2016, signed with the Detroit Lions on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Newberry was participating in the first day of police academy as he trained to join the Stuart Police Department.

The department tweeted about Newberry’s call from the Lions.
