Sun Life Stadium Facelift Begins

The nearly three-decade old home of the Miami Dolphins, Sun Life Stadium, began to undergo its largest renovation in years Monday after years of political roadblocks.

The renovation is expected to take 19 months, according to the Miami Herald. The renovation will include the installation of an open roof to protect fans from the elements, more premium seating, a redesign of the overall seating structure and other upgrades.

The need for the upgrade came after Miami hosted its last Super Bowl in 2010. The city was told then by the NFL that it would not host another Super Bowl until the stadium underwent major renovations.

The NFL’s stance on the Super Bowl helped kickstart a campaign by team owner Stephen Ross to attempt to secure public money for upgrades to the stadium. However, in the aftermath of the Marlins Park debacle, securing public money proved impossible despite Ross’ best attempts at the local and state level.

Ross finally decided to finance the stadium himself and agreed to a deal that will see the county pay the team for large events like Super Bowls and college football national championship games to the newly renovated stadium.
