Now he's sad and cool.

Michael Beasley apologized today for the string of NBA violations that led to his "lock down" in a Houston rehab, and for the drama that ensued following his pot-baggie Twitter post (sadly, no apologies for the crime against tattoos).

"First, I'd like to start off saying we all know my situation, we all know what happened,'' Beasley said, though we actually don't, and whatever did was masked by the strange assignment of intensive drug rehab for what appear to be non-addiction issues.

"I'd like to start by apologizing to the fans, the team and to the organization, and also thanking everyone for their support and for backing me up during my lowest hour.''

Beasley spent just 17 minutes with 3 reporters, one of whom asked him directly if he had a substance abuse problem. The answer?

"No, sir.''

His hair was in braids, so we know he was serious. He also denied being suicidal: "Those tweets were miscommunications that were misunderstood. I think I channeled my emotions and threw my emotions the wrong way. That was the day I was told I was going to be at the facility 30 more days. I was upset.''

However heavy-handed, the time in rehab spent with well-respected counselor John Lucas seems to have been beneficial for Beasley, who struggled with handling the demands of the NBA after being drafted at 18.

"Being locked down for as long as I was gave me a chance to really get my life organized and get back in touch with myself," Beasley said. "I think over this past year, I've got caught up in the NBA life, as most of us do.

"I think this gave me the perfect opportunity to just sit down and evaluate my life and get the good separated from the bad."

No word on which category SpongeBob SquarePants falls into, but Beasley clearly puts fan mail into "great."

"I opened my locker and my mail had so many cards from fans," he said. "It just made me feel that everybody was back on my side. Maybe I'm a little messed up in the mind, thinking that most people are against me.''

Most people? No. The bag of weed? Clearly. That thing came out of nowhere.
