Tigers Roar Back in 6th To Beat Marlins

The Marlins were the victims of a big inning on Wednesday in an 8-4 loss to the Tigers

The Miami Marlins had a big inning go against them this time in their 8-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.

A day after putting up eight runs in the eighth inning for a win, the Marlins allowed six runs in the sixth frame of this game. The offensive outburst from Detroit came after a stellar start from David Phelps. It was a game that could factor into some upcoming roster decisions as well.

Phelps is likely going to open the year as Miami's long-man in the bullpen but could eventually find himself in the starting rotation. The right-hander has had a great spring with a minuscule 0.56 E.R.A. Phelps hurled five shutout innings and only allowed two hits while striking out three.

The sixth inning damage for Detroit all came off of Sam Dyson. The right-hander is trying to make the team as a member of the bullpen but now appears more likely to be cut from camp. Dyson has a 10.29 E.R.A this spring after allowing a grand slam on Wednesday.

Nick Masset who is also trying to win a relief job allowed a pair of runs in an inning. Masset has a 5.63 E.R.A in the spring and will also likely be reassigned to minor-league camp soon.

Donovan Solano made a big statement in his pursuit of a bench job with a three-hit game. Solano also hit his first home run of the spring and remains in contention for a roster spot. Reid Brignac who is the likely other choice was 1-5 in this game.

Jordany Valdespin tripled once again and now has four this spring. Valdespin entered camp with little chance of making the roster but is now giving Miami serious thought.

The Marlins will send Henderson Alvarez to the mound on Thursday for a start against the St. Louis Cardinals.
