13-Year-Old Beaten Unconscious on First Day Riding School Bus

Seven students charged with beating up girl

A 13-year-old north Florida girl’s first day on the  school bus led to a trip to the hospital when she was beaten unconscious by seven students who wouldn’t let her sit down during morning ride January 6, reported the Ocala Star-Banner.

The victim and suspects attend Liberty Middle School in Marion Oaks just south of Ocala. After arriving at the school, the girl was taken to the hospital where she was treated for a concussion, several bruises and muscle spasms, said the report.

When interviewed, the girl told police it was her first day riding the bus but that the students would not let her sit down. When one of the students threw a shoe at her she threw it back, after which several of them ganged up on her.

Police later arrested seven students, ranging in age from 12 to 15, and charged them with felony battery or disorderly conduct. Several witnesses who observed the attack said that the victim appeared to have seizures on the floor of the bus after the attack.

Police say some of the suspects admitted their role in the fight, with one 14-year old girl claiming she punched the victim in the head 10 to 15 times. Another reportedly told police that the group surrounded the girl and kicked her when she was on the floor.

According to the report, school officials said the involved students may be expelled or reassigned to another school but likely won’t be allowed back onto campus until legal issues are settled.
