A Port Charlotte man who authorities say tried to pass off a phony $50 bill at a convenience store didn't realize a uniformed deputy was standing nearby.
Ryan Anthony Signore, 25, was arrested Sunday night inside the Rainbow Food Market at 2350 Harbor Boulevard after he tried to buy cigarettes and iced tea with the fake bill, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office.
Signore had handed the poor quality cash to the store's clerk, who refused to accept it. The deputy, who was standing near Signore, stopped him and asked if he had any more $50 bills, authorities said.
When the deputy searched Signore's car, two more fake $50 bills were found inside, authorities said.
An investigation revealed Signore had tried to pass off one of the bills earlier at a gas station, but that clerk also refused to take it, authorities said.
Signore, a convicted felon, was arrested and booked into the Charlotte County Jail and later released on $2,500 bond. It was unknown whether he has an attorney.
