Married Woman Shoots Cancer-Stricken, Live-in Ex-Boyfriend: Authorities

Bizarre Florida Keys love triangle ends in shooting, arrest

A Key Largo woman is facing an aggravated battery charge after she shot and wounded her cancer-stricken former lover who was living with her and her husband, authorities said.

The shooting happened around 1 a.m. Thursday after 37-year-old Candice Lee got into an argument with her "male roommate," 45-year-old Shakir Muilam, at a home in the 200 block of St. Croix Place, Monroe County Sheriff's Office officials said.

Deputies who responded to reports of a possible shooting at the home found Muilam lying on a bedroom floor with Lee applying pressure to a wound on his side, officials said.

When a deputy asked Lee where the weapon was she pointed to a rifle and said "It's right there, that's what I shot him with," authorities said.

An investigation revealed Lee and her husband have an "open relationship" which allows them to have "intimate partners," authorities said.

Lee and Muilam had been lovers but had broken up, but she and her husband let Muilam move in with them after they found out he has cancer, officials said.

Just before the shooting, Lee said Muilam woke up from a nap and found Lee outside talking with her current lover and became angry, authorities said.

Lee told Muilam "that was her lifestyle and if he didn't like it he could leave," and she started carrying his belongings outside to the driveway, authorities said.

As the two continued arguing, Lee fell to the floor and hit her head, then went into her room and grabbed her rifle, authorities said. As she was pointing the rifle at him, she saw him reach for something and pulled the trigger, authorities said.

Muilam was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami for treatment of a gunshot wound to his upper thigh. He was in stable condition Thursday night.

Lee was arrested and charged with aggravated battery. She was being held without bond Friday and it's unknown whether she has an attorney.
