A Miami Beach woman has gone to the dogs -- in her diet.

Animal activist Nikki Moustaki is eating dog food once a day in the hopes of bringing attention to a bill that she says will protect abused animals.

It's not the hard stuff either. It's soft, wet, smells bad and is just gross.

"It tastes like dog food, I'm not gonna lie to you," Moustaki said Monday. "I have to spice it up and make it in some recipes, but I've been eating it straight too."

Moustaki has been eating mutt meals for a week now, posting each doggie dining experience on YouTube.

The Ohio bill she's hoping will pass would would increase the penalty for animal cruelty. It's called Nitro's Law and it's named after a dog that was left starved to death by a boarding family.

If you think Moustaki's crazy, you're not alone, but the dog trainer who splits her time between Miami and New York says this is how bad she wants to stop animal cruelty.

"I think 95 percent of people have been very supportive and the other five percent think I'm absolutely out of my mind," she said. "But I think this is gonna work, I think Nitro's Law just needs some attention."

Moustaki vows to eat dog food every day until the bill gets re-introduced after it died in the Senate. So far, Moustaki says she's mixed the dog food with nachos, mac and cheese and has a few other dishes planned, including German Shepherd's pie and the stomach-churningly named "Slobbery Joe."

"Everytime I [eat dog food] I say 'here's to you Nitro' and I remember those dogs that were starved," she said.

She says she's been chowing down on a high-end dog food called Lucky Dog Cuisine, and says it's safe and she hasn't gotten sick.
