A Miami-Dade judge set bond at $38,000 on Sunday for a man accused of pointing a gun at a fellow driver and then crashing into several cars on a busy highway.

Edwin Efrain Vilchez, 28, is also on an immigration "hold". He said in court that he was in the process of hiring an attorney.

Judge Mindy Glazer told Vilchez in court that he faces eight charges including leaving the scene of a crash, two counts of reckless driving, D.U.I. and battery on a law enforcement officer.

Vilchez is a convicted felon, found guilty of multiple sex crimes in Washington in 2009.  He is
also a registered sex offender, listed on the Florida Department of Law Enforcement website.

Witnesses told police Vilchez pulled a gun on another driver after a heated exchange at a Shell gas station on 104 Street and U.S.1 in Pinecrest Friday night.  Vilchez chased the man northbound on the Palmetto Expressway, ramming his car into the first victim's vehicle then speeding off, authorities said.

A Miami-Dade police officer saw Vilchez speeding at more than 100 miles an hour and went after him as Vilchez continued to hit other cars along the way, authorities said.  The Florida Highway Patrol caught him a short time later after he exited at Okeechobee Road in Hialeah Gardens.

One of the people Vilchez is accused of hitting with his car was in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
