NBC Miami/T51 Internship Information

NBC Miami and Telemundo 51 offer unpaid internships to qualified undergraduate candidates interested in the TV broadcasting industry. Interns gain hands-on experience while working on challenging projects, networking with professionals and learning from some of the brightest minds in the business. The duties and responsibilities of an intern vary by department.

The intern may work during the Fall, Spring, or Summer college semesters, full-time or part-time, based on availability and business needs. Interns are located at the NBC Miami/T51 station in Miramar.

Fall Semester Internship (August – December)
Resumes Accepted from April through June

Spring Semester Internship (January – May)

Summer Semester Internship (May – August)

What We Require:
  • Enrolled at an accredited four or five-year college or university.
  • Undergraduate Major related to business.
  • Documentation stating that the internship will be given credit or recognized as a necessary part of your curriculum. (Letter must be on school letterhead and must be signed and dated by your professor or advisor.)
  • Must have a minimum of a 3.0 out of 4.0 overall grade point average.
  • A demonstrated interest in communications or related field.
 Internship opportunities could include working in one of the following departments:
 
Assignment Desk
  • Assist assignment editor in conceiving and executing news coverage and coordinating reporters and field crews
  • Assist in generating new story ideas
  • Place and receive phone calls regarding prospective news stories
  • Participate in daily editorial meetings
  • Aid in establishing a network of contacts and sources across South Florida
  • Work with producers and news management in shaping newscast</LI><br />
  • Other duties as assigned
Editing
  • Assist in reviewing and evaluating local news, promotions, sales, and sports footage
  • Assist in non-linear editing of local programs, including opens, segments, bumps, closes, and promos
  • Assist with the overall presentation of news broadcast, including working with archive tapes, taking feeds, and making comp reels
  • Confer with supervisors concerning layout or editing approaches needed to increase dramatic or entertainment value of production
  • Determine the specific audio, dialogue and visual effects necessary to input into tapes by using Panasonic Newsbytes equipment
  • Participate in editorial meetings to gather assignments for the day
Sports
  • Assist in creating daily sportscasts and sports specials
  • Gather information about sports events through research, interviews, and attendance at local sports events
  • Log and edit game highlights
  • Assist in determining and writing the content of the sportscast using non-linear equipment
  • Coordinate with graphics to assist in compiling sports effects and tapes to be used in sportscast
Producing
  • Assist in researching, producing, organizing and bringing to the air the latest in news stories by choosing relevant stories, coordinating the order and style of presentation and writing the stories and television news
  • Monitor and edit all elements of newscasts by collaborating with reporters, writers, graphic artists and editors to ensure on-time delivery
  • Run teleprompter
  • Assist in field producing

Sales

  • Assist account managers in sale's strategies through research and prospecting
  • Assist in identifying local client contacts
  • Prepare Power Point presentations for clients
  • Participate in client meetings, as appropriate
  • Aid in compiling proposals, transcribe commercial orders, track tapes and organize all correspondence and order information
  • Assist in post-buy recap process (proof of performance)

Marketing

  • Assist in developing on-air and online marketing ideas and solutions for NBC 6 clients
  • Assist in presenting marketing ideas and promotions to clients
  • Work with writers and graphic artists to oversee copywriting, design, layout paste-up and production of promotional materials
  • Support off-site shoots as appropriate

Research

  • Work with Research Manager to create TV reports and sales collateral material to be used by Account Managers
  • Assist in creating and maintaining programming inventory, including ratings
  • Create Power Point presentations
  • Update programming schedules
  • Aid in analyzing market trends, which may affect station ratings
 Creative Services
  • Support on on-air productions and video shoots
  • Work with producers to promote new series and image campaigns
  • Assist with graphic designing for newscasts by creating still or animated graphics
  • Assist in public relations by enhancing the relationship between the station and the South Florida Community with Public Service Announcements, community events, and special programs that affect local current affairs
  • Update and send out programming schedule
  • Gather information for FCC reports
Technical Operations
  • Train and assist in floor management and learn to floor direct a live newscast
  • Train and assist in robotic camera operation and learn robotic camera system
  • Learn various control room equipment (staging, robotics, character generator, audio, etc.) from the technical operators
  • Learn television studio lighting techniques provided by NBC 6 studio crew
  • Final objective of the production intern is to achieve professional proficiency in one or more of the tasks listed above.
Digital Media (NBCMiami.com)
  • Writing stories on everything from local news and sports to new restaurants and nightlife.
  • Managing of Facebook.com and Twitter content.
  • Shooting, editing and posting video.

    If you satisfy the NBCMiami/T 51 internship requirements, you can apply by sending your resume by email to nbc6internships@nbcuni.com. Be sure to include in your cover letter, which department you would like to work in (please list at least 3 departments) and the semester you are applying for.

    Once you are accepted as an intern, you will receive an orientation packet. You must read and sign all the NBC Universal policies and procedures and return to the station as soon as possible.

    Your NBC Miami/T51 mentor will discuss a work schedule in accordance with the number of hours needed to satisfy your internship credits. During the internship, you should always check-in with your assigned mentor upon entering the building.

    Securing housing and transportation during the internship are the responsibility of the intern. NBC 6/T51 cannot offer support in this area.
