9/24: Sing It, Thursday

Habanera, jai ho, and essential arthouse

A LESSON IN HABANERA: Edward Louis (played by Richard Gere) should've definitely taken Julia Roberts to this opera. Come see Carmen at the Colony Theatre, a classic opera set in Seville, Spain, around 1830, and concerns Carmen, a beautiful Gipsy with a fiery temper. Ever the free-lover type, she woos the corporal Don José, an inexperienced soldier. It's an opera "Miss Vivian" in would certainly swoon over. 8 P.M.

BOLLYWOOD IS CALLING: Jai Ho, indeed. Come experience an authentic Indian dinner at Indian Palate in Coral Gables while enjoying lively entertainment with Bollywood films showing on the big screen. Transport yourself to Mumbai for a night with intoxicating aromas, delectable delicacies and traditional Indian music. And, to give into your philanthropic tendencies (we know you have them), a portion of the evening's proceeds is to benefit Miami Children's Hospital Foundation. 7 P.M.

ARTHOUSE BLUES: For all you classic movie fans, a classic you can finally appreciate. "Wild Strawberries," the 1957 film that catapulted Bergman to the forefront of world cinema, will be screened at Miami Beach Cinematheque on Espanola Way. The director's richest, most humane movie depicts an old man, impending death, who is forced to recall and reevaluate his life and past. 8:30 P.M.
