Fergie tests out the stretchiness of her leggings.

Since leggings made their way back into our wardrobes, this '80s craze is still as popular as ever in Miami.

Aside from the comfort factor, their versatility and effortless style make them one of the wisest investments any recessionista can make right now.

Plus, “this season the legging becomes the sleek base to fall's accentuated shoulders,” said Ken Downing, Neiman Marcus’ Fashion Director.

Meaning you’ll be wearing them for another good eight months or more.

So if you’re strapped for cash, but still want to look fab, it’s time to break the piggy bank and get yourself a pair.

    Start off with a black.

Like the LBD in your closet, the black legging is the LBL and you’ll be able to wear it with practically anything from a fancy knee-skimming frock to a plain old tee.

If you favor color or something with a little bit more edge, there are dozens of hues and styles to choose from.

Muted tones like gray, brown and beige are easy to match while bolder shades like purple and neon hot pink will brighten up the dullest of outfits.

Prints and patterns are also the “in” thing right now. Nab a tiger print version from Urban Outfitters or go for a dainty polka dot or floral from Forever 21. If you have money to spare, snag Missoni’s zigzag print.

Ladies wanting all eyes on their gams should opt for metallics at American Apparel or try a lacy one and channel Madonna from her Material Girl days.

Under the sun, slip on a cropped pair and mix and match with tops and tees.

At night, dress your leggings with a sexy evening tunic and pair them up “with a bootie or a sexy aggressive heel,” suggested Downing.
