1 Person Killed in Wrong-Way Wreck on I-95: FHP

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of a wrong-way wreck on northbound I-95 that killed one person and injured several others early Sunday morning.

According to a release from FHP, the driver of a 2014 Toyota Yaris was headed in the wrong direction in the northbound lanes of I-95 just south of the Biscayne Boulevard exit in the center lane just before 5:30 a.m. Sunday. The wrong-way driver slammed head-first into a 2013 Honda Civic, causing the Civic to crash into the concrete barrier.

The driver of the Civic, 23-year-old Carmen Criales, was pronounced dead at the scene by Miami Fire Rescue first responders.

Three other people, including the wrong-way driver and two passengers in the Civic, were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition, FHP says.

The cause of the crash, including whether alcohol was a factor, remains under investigation.

This is a developing story and will be updated as new information becomes available.
