FIFA Unveils Russia 2018 World Cup Logo

The next World Cup is not until 2018 but Tuesday in Moscow FIFA unveiled the official logo for the Russia 2018 World Cup via two of NBC 6’s sister stations.

The design was unveiled by a crew of cosmonauts on board Russia’s Space Station leading into a live graphic projection of the emblem over the iconic Bolshoi Theater building located in the heart of Moscow.

The unveiling of the logo in Russia marks the beginning of a historic venture between FIFA and NBCUniversal’s properties, Telemundo and mun2.

The new agreement gives Telemundo network stations and the cable network mun2 and all its digital properties, the Spanish-language broadcast rights in the United States to all FIFA events until 2022.

Joe Uva, Chairman of Hispanic Enterprises and Content for NBCUniversal said he is proud to see this major accomplishment for NBCUniversal come to life.

“Three years and one week ago, NBCUniversal announced the game-changing acquisition of the exclusive Spanish-language US media rights to the FIFA World Cup,” said Uva.

“Today we are proud to see the first tangible manifestation of this major acquisition, which will bring unprecedented exposure for Telemundo and mun2 and offer a unique opportunity to accelerate audience growth and consolidate our position in the industry.”

FIFA’s presentation of the logo is the official start of what becomes the symbol of the tournament’s values highlighting the traditions and the distinctive character of the host nation, Russia.

“The launch of the Emblem is a wonderful event to kick things off and I’m certain that the World Cup will be a success here in four years,” said Sepp Blatter, FIFA president.

The new design incorporates iconic images inspired by Russia's rich artistic tradition and its pioneering spirit in space innovation. According to FIFA it also “unites magic and dreams.”

But you won’t have to wait until 2018 to experience World Cup excitement, FIFA action on Telemundo and mun2 starts as soon as December 6, 2014 with the broadcast of the draw for the Women’s World Cup from Ottawa, Canada.

In 2015 Telemundo and mun2 will feature four major FIFA tournaments, the Men’s U-20 from New Zealand, Women’s World Cup from Canada, Men’s U-17 World Cup from Chile and Men’s Beach Soccer World Cup from Portugal.
