Summer Make-Up Trends

With the summer season officially here, new make-up trends are popping up at department stores and mass retailers nationally. What colors and trends will work best with your skintone? Latin Beat caught up with celebrity make-up artist Elizabeth Ulloa at the Neutrogena Beauty Inside & Out Retreat held at the Viceroy Hotel on Brickell last week to find out what tips and tricks you can add to your beauty arsenal right now.

You’ve worked with top celebrities including Demi Lovato, Britney Spears, and Nadine Velasquez so you need to stay ahead of the trends. What’s hot for this summer?

“The hottest trend for summer right now is less-is-more. It’s about having that beautiful complexion and showing off that natural glow. For eyes I’ve noticed that there has been a shift from powdered eyeshadows to cream-based ones. It’s the summertime and you will want your eyes to look more radiant. Stick to coppers, taupe, bronzes, and pearlized shades. I also really like diffused pinks and peaches since they can work with most skin tones.

On lips I’ve noticed the bitten look is what’s in. Women are achieving that natural/healthy look with stains, not so much of a lipstick color.”

When it’s time to head out for the night, how can women incorporate a bit more color?

“To create the perfect nightime look I like to keep the eyes natural with the pop added to the lips. You can go for reds but stick to softer tones like peach and papaya. By doing this you will keep the focus on the lips while the rest of the face glows.”

Latinas come in all different shades from fair to Afro-Latina. What shades work best for each group?

“When I’m working with someone that has a fair complexion for the eyes I focus on lighter colors. For medium skin tones I like to use more coppery colors because it has those beautiful orange hues underneath that will make the eyes pop. And for ladies with darker complexions I like to use richer tones like bronzy browns that will help open up the eyes .”

Moms keep pretty busy schedules and many times forgo using essential beauty products. What top items could they focus on that will be quick to apply and help protect them from the sun?

“Using a shine control foundation with SPF would be the #1 product for them to start their day with. This will help your skin look flawless while also protecting your skin. Next I would suggest using a crease proof eyeshadow that has some great staying power because they probably don’t have the time to re-apply. For the lips they should stick to more balm-like products instead of lipsticks or glosses because it will stay on longer and will help keep your lips moisturized.”

Lots of people will be going on vacations this summer. What should they keep handy in their make-up bags?

“My number 1 tip for travelers is to carry sunscreen. If you plan on also wearing cosmetics when you’re out it’s easier to find products that already offer sun protection. For lips you can grab color sticks and crease proof eyeshadow for eyes.”

What is your top tip or trick you can share with women?

“The most important part of a beauty regimen is skin care. That’s the best way to get that radiant glow to show. When I knew that I wanted to be a make-up artist my focus was always on skin. I sometimes think I should have become an aesthetician but with the products on the market today I realized that I could have the best of both worlds.Taking care of your skin, and following a simple-yet-effective skin regimen is the key to achieving that beautiful flawless look without having to use a lot of make-up.”
