He owns not one but two PR/Marketing firms (Pink Dollar and TEB). He co-publishes and edits a weekly (WireMagazine). He sits on boards and belongs to steering committees and hosts his own series of brunches. He's also one of the best-informed operatives on either side of the causeways. He's the one and only Thomas Barker, and on Thursday evening he's throwing a shindig at BASE for Jeremy Scott's one-of-a-kind adidas SLVR line. So Niteside decided to chat him up.
First off, are you or are you not Travis Barker's bastard brother? [Laughing] God I wish. The guy seems like a blast, and I am sure we'd get into some trouble together! I appreciate you asking, though. Everyone usually asks me if I am somehow related to the granddaddy of all pimps, Mr. Bob Barker!
So that wasn't you spotted shopping with Shanna Moakler up in Bal Harbour a year or so ago? If it were me, you'd be the first to know. I'd love to hang with her. Anyone who slaps Paris Hilton in the face is sure to be someone that's got their head on straight.
Now that that's cleared up, let's talk about tomorrow night's party. Whatcha got goin' on? Tomorrow night is going to be a super hot event. Adidas SLVR is releasing their 2011 spring/summer collection, which can only be found at one of the most legendary boutiques on Lincoln Road, BASE. The collection features a one-time collaboration with designer Jeremy Scott. The capsule collection is just as over the top and fun as Jeremy is! Hipsters, fashionistas, and everything in between will be sipping on some fab cocktails courtesy of Herradura Tequila and Finlandia Vodka and nibbling on some bites from The Standard, while live, interactive mannequins rock the SLVR X Jeremy Scott collection.
Don't you also have something else coming up at Base? It seems like there is always something going on these days. Season is in full swing! For Winter Music Conference, Base is bringing in Cazwell to work the turntables (March 11). This guy is known for his super sexy "Ice Cream Truck" video, and I am praying he will bring a few of his hot Ice Cream Truck dancers with him. One can only hope!
Speaking of South Beach shindigs, word is you're also hosting some kinda swanky to-do at The Lords -- that true? Yep, it'll be for Miami Beach Pride, the largest single day event in Miami Beach. Last year, we had about 35,000 people workin' it out on our sandy shores to the beats of DJ Danny Taneglia and the vocals of Estelle. On Friday, March 4, The Lords South Beach will host a Pride Entertainment Preview, which will give everyone a small glimpse of the fabulous entertainers that will grace the stage this year. Of course we'll have tons of free flowing libations and food to boot!
What's MB Pride?Miami Beach Gay Pride is the first and only Gay Pride in Miami and Miami Beach. About 10 of us got together four years ago to create the Miami Beach Gay Pride Board, which eventually developed Miami Beach Gay Pride. The first one was crazy successful. We had about 20,000 people flock to our multi-billion dollar sandbar to enjoy the parade, expo, and dance event. Three years later, Pride is going to be even larger with an expected attendance of close to 40,000 people. On top of closing Ocean Drive from 5th to 15th Street, we will be hosting a number of events.
You actually kinda got your start doing good deeds under Florida's much revered Governor Lawton Chiles. What other community groups are you involved with? When I was a wee lad, I was lucky enough to be one of the kids working on Florida's anti-tobacco campaign under the executive offices of Governor Lawton Chiles. He was an amazing man, and I learned a lot from him. Being a part of that really created the path that would eventually lead me to where I am today.
